True hospitality begins with love—love for God and love for people. Loving self as used in this Scripture is not what the world calls self-love (individualism). Since the nation of Israel was a community and had to relate as one, “love him as you love yourself,” was not referring to individuals loving and taking care of themselves but to the community loving and caring for each other. The Israelites loved and cared for fellow Israelites so they were commanded to love the strangers in their land. We have strangers in our different communities who are sometimes treated by the natives as outcasts. God expects us to love them the same way we love ourselves. It was a call for equality, compassion and recognition of value and dignity of every person.
Reflection
Self-centeredness is not commanded by God.
Prayer
Pray for the enablement to love strangers around you. Pray for CBC: Pray for all the Field Youth Chairpersons, all the Association Chairpersons, and the churches' Youth Presidents.
