God is a just judge. His justice stipulates that death is the penalty for sin. Everyone who sins deserves death for their sin. The liar, like the murderer, deserves death for sinning against God. Jesus paid that penalty for you. No one owes God that debt once they believe in Jesus. The penalty is paid. Our passage teaches us that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. This means that as the one who has paid the penalty we owe, when we sin, God looks at us and just as he is about to strike us dead, Jesus steps in and says, "that one no longer owes you because I died for him." He present his death on the cross for you as the evidence that you no longer owe God. Now, John is clear. He writes earlier that he is writing so that they might not sin. Sin has no dominion over a person who is under the law of righteousness. However, if a Christian sins, he has a propitiation with the Father. You are spared divine wrath every second of your life because of Jesus. The whole world is spared divine wrath every day because of Jesus. While your being spared is an act of mercy, theirs is an act of judgment. Believers should have assurance of their salvation, even when they struggle with sin because they are in the flesh, they should know that Christ’s sacrifice paid for their sins.
Reflection
God will not hold you guilty of sins that have been paid for. Jesus has paid for your sins. He stands daily before the Father showing him his nailed pierced hands and feet, and his spear pierced side as evidence that you no longer deserve death for any of your sins. How should you respond to someone who has paid a debt you could not pay?
Prayer
Ask God for grace to teach about the freedom that comes from the atoning work of Christ.
