If someone continues to commit the same sins against you, will you continue to forgive them? It is easy to think we are forgiving people until we find someone who can push all our wrong buttons. Such situations give us opportunities to apply the lesson of our passage. In Jewish numerology, the number seven symbolizes perfection. Peter's suggestion in his question, when he asks if he could forgive his brother against him seven times, suggests that he believed that the perfect limit of forgiveness was seven times. In Peter's mind, you would be justified to take matters into your own hands if you forgave your brother seven times and he was foolish enough to test you again by sinning against you. The Lord's answer, in which he adds 70 to that seven, basically teaches that forgiveness should have no limit. His followers should place no quota on forgiveness. A person knows that they are truly a disciple of Jesus when they forgive when it is hard, not when it is easy. Without continuous forgiveness, our families and communities will be in chaos. We are expected to extend mercy and compassion to one person or the other each day of our lives. Therefore, we must make a deliberate choice to forgive even when it’s difficult.
Reflection
God expects us to forgive always. We must not set quotas on our forgiveness, and we show ourselves to be truly his children when we choose to forgive even when it is hard.
Prayer
Pray that you will not limit forgiveness but freely give it to those who need.
