John’s intention is that his audience will live without sinning. So he sets out to make them understand what it means to know God. He states that knowledge of God cannot be separated from experience of righteousness expressed in love. So the highest claim of our knowledge of God is in obeying Him. God is the true light shining because darkness cannot overshadow it. And a sign that people are in this light is how much they love their brothers. Brothers here refer to brothers and sisters in Christ but can have a wider application. Love for fellow believers conquers darkness and any cause of stumbling. God’s love in us will express itself through us in concrete acts of love for fellow brothers. Our love for God must be proven through how we express love for our brothers.
Reflection
You cannot love God in secret.
Prayer
Trust God to prove your love for Him by loving the people around you.
