Struggles and challenges are inevitable. They are a natural part of living in a world broken by sin. The awareness of this reality does not reduce the emotional, physical, and spiritual stress they can place on us. Paul teaches through his example of suffering for the gospel in our passage that the struggles and challenges of life are meant to reveal the life of Christ in our mortal bodies. This means that when a Christian goes through struggles and challenges with a firm faith, that faith reveals that he or she has obtained the life of Christ. The life of Christ in him or her makes it possible for that person to bear things which they would naturally be unable to bear without the life of Christ in them. The world is filled with drug abusers, alcoholics, sex addicts, pornography addicts, social media addicts, and other types of addicts. All these individuals turn to these activities to escape the struggles and challenges of life. Our passage shows us that only the new life in Christ Jesus can enable a person to survive in a world like ours without succumbing to any of these things or to suicidal thoughts.
Reflection
Salvation through faith in the death of Christ does not remove struggles and challenges from our lives. It gives us the strength to endure them. The eternal life of Christ makes it possible for us to face hardship without losing hope. He fills us with resilience, helping us to keep moving forward despite the difficulties. We continually bear his death in our bodies through suffering because we are aware that we will also bear his eternal life when we have passed on from this world to the next.
Prayer
Ask that the life of Christ in you may be revealed in its power to keep your faith from failing in the face of struggles and challenges. Pray that he would hold you fast when your faith may fail.
