In our text, Zechariah speaks of the mission of John the Baptist. John will go before Jesus Christ to prepare His way. In preparing the way, he will help people know that their main problem is sin. The Jews at this time saw their bondage to Roman oppression as their primary problem. But John will help them see that they have a problem greater than oppression. He will also help them to know that salvation from oppression must come through repentance and forgiveness of sin. The knowledge John will give to the people is not just cognitive knowledge; it is knowledge that will result in a fundamental change of heart and behavior. John will also announce that God has visited His people; the Messiah is here. He is here to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He is also here to guide His people. The problem for men remains sin. God’s people still need to be delivered from the bondage of sin, the message of the gospel must be preached for people to believe and be saved. Commit yourself to announce this message without any fear, like John the Baptist.
Reflection
Zechariah’s words remind us that, like the people of John the Baptist’s day, we often misdiagnose the real problem in our lives, focusing on external pressures while overlooking the deeper issue of sin that separates us from God. John’s mission was to prepare hearts by exposing this truth and pointing people to the only true source of deliverance—repentance and the forgiveness found in Christ. His message was not merely informational but transformational, calling for a change of heart that produces a change in life. As Christ still shines His light into our darkness and guides those who are willing to follow Him, we too are called to carry this message boldly. In a world distracted by many lesser problems, may we, like John, faithfully point others to the Savior who alone brings true freedom and restoration.
Prayer
Pray that God will help Christians announce the gospel of Jesus Christ for the salvation of God’s people.
