What is the most loving thing you have ever done for another person? Now, what is the most loving thing someone has ever done for you? Our passage tells us the most loving thing that has ever been done for us and the most loving thing we could do for another person. Imagine that you are a prisoner who is about to be killed for your crimes, and an innocent person walks in and tells the executioner to kill them in your place. Understand that this is not loving only because he chose to die for you. It is loving because he chose to take the punishment you deserved. Jesus did that for you if you believe it. Jesus, although he did no wrong thing, chose to die for us. On our part, we emulate this kind of reconciling love when we are willing to let our own needs die for another person to have what they want. We die this type of death in marriage by putting the needs of our spouse always above our own. We die this type of death in friendships and any kind of relationship when we are willing to imitate our Lord and let our desires die for the good of our neighbors' desires.
Reflection
Jesus chose to die a death he did not deserve so that we could be at peace with God. He died for our reconciliation. You can die to be reconciled to another person by letting go of your rights for the sake of peace.
Prayer
Depend on God for the grace and willingness to lay down your life to mediate forgiveness for fellow Christians.
