Paul is charging the Christians to live a life that reflects the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in them. He gives a number of commands from verses 25-32 that the Christians should obey as a way of living their new life in Christ because failure to obey all the commands brings sorrow to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, who is not to be grieved, is the One by whom the Christians are sealed or preserved for the day of redemption. When the Holy Spirit is not grieved, but given the opportunity to be at the center of our life decisions and directions, we can be tender-hearted, forgiving one another. The natural tendency of flesh is to fight back when hurt by someone. But if we live by the Spirit, He gives us the ability to put to death all forms of anger, bitterness, and misdeeds that hinder forgiveness (Romans 8:13-14).
Reflection
The flesh limits forgiveness, but a person who is subject to the Holy Spirit has an endless supply of power to forgive.
Prayer
Humble yourself before the Holy Spirit for His empowerment to forgive. Prayer for the CBC: Pray for diligence, consciousness, and readiness to serve in the lives of all health personnel in the CBC Health Services. Ask for God's blessing and guidance in their roles as healthcare providers.
