John begins this verse by stating how we know love; it is demonstrated by Christ laying down His life. When we talk about sacrificial love, we are referring to the kind of love that goes beyond surface-level affection. Loving one another must go beyond mere affectionate words but sacrificial action. The test of true love is the willingness to sacrifice one’s life for his brothers. Jesus demonstrated such love by laying down His life for the ones He loved. The sacrificial love of Christ distinguished His love from every other form of love that exists. Sacrificial love is the denial of self for another person to gain. Let us learn from the example of Jesus Christ to love our fellow man sacrificially (John 13:15). We will not die for someone but can sacrifice time, money, and more to show love.
