The reason we have to forgive is that we have received forgiveness from God. Not only that, but we daily expect more from Him.  While we have been forgiven and daily need forgiveness, we also find forgiving others very difficult.

Forgiving others is not an option for a Christian but is commanded by God in view of His immeasurable forgiveness. We have received unconditional and unmerited forgiveness from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). We ought to likewise forgive others. God’s forgiveness for us is complete, that is, past, present, and future (Psalm 103:12; Colossians 2:13-14). Learning to forgive from him means we should also be forgive at all times. We must not hold grudges or be vindictive. God does not act like that toward us. We cannot want forgiveness when we are unwilling to forgive others.

Unfortunately, most of us do not understand the weight of this forgiveness. Understanding the measure of forgiveness we have received and what we need daily should help us know that forgiving others is not doing them a favor. It is seeking more of God’s forgiveness (Matthew 6:14-16).
