After underscoring the mission of His servant, the Lord describes how He will set things right. He will be gentle (v.2a). His voice will not be heard in public. This is to say that He will not give Himself to argument. When you read the gospel and see how many times the Pharisees came to challenge Jesus, you will see that He didn’t get into arguments with them; He told them the truth with all respect and humility. Even when they were about to kill Him, He didn’t oppose them. Verse 2b– 4 reveals how compassionate God’s servant will be. He will speak for the weak. He will bring justice to all who have been wronged, and He will be committed to seeing that truth and righteousness prevail. This was fulfilled through the ministry of Jesus Christ (Matt 9:36), and even today, Jesus still shows compassion to those who are weak, those who are abandoned. God’s servant was gentle and compassionate. God’s children are supposed to stand for those who are weak. Believers are called upon to be promoters of the truth and righteousness. Commit yourself to fighting for those who are weak and to promoting truth and righteousness in your community.
Reflection
This passage reminds us that true strength is shown through gentleness, compassion, and a commitment to justice. Jesus modeled this perfectly—He did not seek to win arguments or defend Himself harshly, but instead embodied humility and truth, extending mercy to the weak and the overlooked. His quiet strength brought healing and hope, not division. As His followers, we are called to reflect that same spirit: to defend the vulnerable, to act with integrity, and to let righteousness guide our actions. In a world often driven by pride and power, choosing compassion and truth is how we continue the mission of Christ today.
Prayer
Father, help us to be gentle and compassionate as we speak the truth.
