Two men came to the city of Sodom and were received by Lot who was sitting in the gate of the city. He pleaded with them to spend the night in his house (vv 1-3). If these are the men that just separated with Abraham, then the purpose of their visit was the destruction of those cities. The people proved they deserve such destruction by their action in front of Lot’s house. Because of Lot’s hospitality, his family is protected and led by the hand to a city of safety. Lot’s rescue can be attributed to the prayer of Abraham (18:22-33), yet also to his hospitality because if he did not act as a righteous man and welcome the men, he would have been destroyed with the rest of the city. Maybe all you see is how strangers are treated with contempt and disregard, but you can make a difference by treating them with love. But there is a need for discernment since we live in a difficult time of insecurity.
Reflection
God favors the hospitable.
Prayer
Ask God to help you treat people differently from what your environment does.
