No normal person likes conflict. We all want peace. We will not have perfect peace in the world by destroying all weapons. We will not make the world more peaceful by planting peace plants or wearing peace symbols around our necks. How then can we make peace? The text tells us that peacemakers are called sons of the living God. This means that peacemaking is a characteristic of the living God. People who make peace are people who copy from their heavenly father and do what he does. When they do what he does, people recognize it and call them sons of God. How does God, the father of peacemakers, make peace? God makes peace with people through his son (Rom. 5:10; 2 Cor. 5:19). Jesus, the son of God, the Prince of Peace, not only reconciles people to God but also reconciles people to one another (Eph. 2:14). If you want to be a true peacemaker like God, you ought to point them to Jesus, the son of God, the Prince of Peace. Peacemakers, then, are evangelists, not activists. Activists might provide a temporary peace, but evangelists provide permanent peace.
Reflection
What should you do to encourage your children, who are always fighting, to love one another? Point them to the Prince of Peace. A relationship with the Prince of Peace will inevitably lead to a good relationship between your children. What should you do to help a struggling marriage? Point the people in it to the Prince of Peace. Your advice might help the situation temporarily, but only a relationship with the Prince of Peace will bring a lasting solution to the conflicts in the marriage. Whatever conflict you might think of right now, only the Prince of Peace can bring a permanent solution to it.
Prayer
Dear heavenly father, help me to be a peacemaker by pointing people to Jesus, the Prince of peace. Forgive me for trying to use my intellect and worldly wisdom to try to institute peace where there is conflict. Give me the wisdom I need to always look to the Prince of Peace for peace and to point people to him.
