We sometimes lack peace because we want things for ourselves that God does not want for us and would not give to us. In addition, God sometimes withholds certain things from us not because we do not need them, but because the time in which we need those things has not yet arrived. This means in essence that our will usually does not align with the will of God. These reality informed the Lord's instruction to us in Matthew 6:10. When we pray, we must ask God to do His will and not ours. His will is clearly revealed in His word, but we sometimes fail to see it and thus pray prayers that either go directly against His will or do not align with His will. We demonstrate both love for and trust in God when we ask Him to do His will in our lives, not ours. We also demonstrate dependence on God when we are willing to trust his will. The prayer that God's will might prevail in the world is a prayer of a person who truly believes that God, as sovereign, will act right.
Reflection
Peace cannot escape from the heart of that man who has fully surrendered to God's sovereignty and will. When things are not going well, a person who has surrendered to God's sovereignty has no fear because he knows that while things might not be going well in his or her eyes, the God who is good, kind, merciful, gracious, long-suffering, just, generous, compassionate (Exodus 34:6), and abounding in steadfast love has a will in which all things are working out for good to them that love him.
Prayer
Father, please help me to take thy will and make it mine. Make my heart long only for the things you long for and desire only the things you desire.
