After urging His disciples to love their enemies, Jesus shows the ground on which this is possible. When we obey Jesus’ command to “Judge not and condemn not,” we can easily forgive. These two commands do not permit sinful behavior. The call to “judge not” means not to make harsh, critical conclusions about people. And “condemn not” means we should not pass final judgment on someone. These attitudes are common in the world where we hear people saying, “that one can never change.” If we hold such a view, forgiveness will be hard. Jesus is teaching against focusing on the wrongs of people. If we must forgive people, we must not evaluate and pass sentence on them. None in the world deserves God’s forgiveness, yet He forgave while we were yet sinners (Rom 5:8).
Reflection
God’s forgiveness enables us to forgive others.
Prayer
Ask the Spirit of God for the enablement to forgive.
