The humble in heart have the assurance of God’s grace. Quoting from Proverbs 3:34, “But He gives more grace,” James says, “therefore it says, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” This means that God had set a high standard for wholehearted love and devotion on the part of his people as they resist the pleasures of this world. The good news is that He does not expect that His people should struggle with the issue of wholehearted devotion with their strength, that is why He gives grace that is greater than the hard demand he places before them. The plead for submission to God comes from the expectation that the humble are able to submit based on the grace that has been poured out on them. Therefore, Christians must be those who willingly submit to God rather than proudly insist on satisfying their own desires for pleasures.
Reflection
We are reminded that, true humility opens the door to God’s abundant grace. While God sets a high standard for wholehearted love and devotion, He does not leave us to meet it by our own strength. Instead, His grace empowers the humble to submit to Him, resisting the fleeting pleasures of the world. Pride, on the other hand, closes us off from this grace, as it leads us to rely on our own desires rather than God’s provision. As Christians, we are called to embrace humility, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient to guide us into a life of faithful obedience and wholehearted devotion.
Prayer
Trust God to humbly submit to Him daily.
