God is the primary authority in every person's life. The authority figures that come after God are parents. The parents here are the father and the mother who raised or are raising you. Respect for them is foundational to a well-ordered and healthy family, church, and society. The respect that produces such a well-ordered society is respect for parents "in the Lord."

"In the Lord" means that the parents are godly examples to the children. The parents' godly example, followed by their children, is how they obey them.
A child who honors his parents never thinks of insulting his or her parents in front of or behind their backs (Exod. 21:15, 17). A child who honors his or her parents is not stubborn or disrespectful to the parents' godly leadership (Deut. 21:18-21).

Parents who want their children to obey this commandment must make it easy for them by being the godly parents who deserve such respect and honor.
Children who obey and honor godly parents must also be aware that they obey and honor the God their parents represent when they honor and obey their parents.
